Well, we did see they were kind of raising larvae themselves, also apparently what Kaina shot was more of a treat than a necessity, at least that's the picture I got. If nothing else, I expect they have reserves and preserved stuff, I think I recall them mentioning something like smoked insect foods in ep1 and even if they are old, it appears that there are various foods are available that they collect, but just aren't as desirable. I could be wrong of course, but that's what I've gathered so far.

They will eat themselves, so don't worry about their meal lol. Anyways, as the elders said if they die, MC will be all alone, now is a chance to let him go instead of taking advantage of him until they die. Love them, they're not selfish and always think about MC's future.

Who knows if their bodies would give in faster than the canopy or other essential elements of their world? From the news Ririha brought, mankind is already going extinct, even inside the sea, while "civilisation" up there is drawing its last breath. The elders are merely choosing the lesser evil and doing what real parents have done for their young since forever, prioritising their right to live and having the kids hold onto even the flimsiest chance at a solution. It's bittersweet, but it's the circle of life.

Alas, you are right, but that's not the MC fault. Whether this is how the original is, or the adaptation was shaped to be, there is no "drama" in the sense that the MC would get unsure if he can leave them, argue that they are the only people he had ever known etc. Instead he immediately agreed to it. It lacks some finer details to human relationship, making it feel dry and rushed.

Let's hope this is the only time we have to note this.
